I bought both Fitness for Dummies and Weight Training for Dummies a few months back when I decided to go from couch potato to fit. The former contains some information about weight training but you need the latter to get detailed explanations and learn how to design your own training program. I strongly recommend this book if you are a beginner like me and want to:1) develop and pursue an effective weight training program without the help of a trainer (or get the best bang for your buck if you do have access to one)
2) understand what you are getting into before you start
3) avoid spending loads of money on unnecessary trendy stuff
I had very little experience with gyms and fitness prior to reading this book: I held a health club membership for about 4 months a couple of years back and in my first week I did pay for sessions with a trainer. His patronizing tone was a bit annoying, but I did follow his instructions and that was OK for a while. The problem was that I didn't know what I was doing and had no idea of what to do besides repeating the few exercises the trainer had showed me. I was just blindly following a routine without any purpose. Also, I was always back to square one after returning from a trip, because I would simply stop exercising whenever I was out of town. All this was very frustrating so I decided to quit.
Fast forward 2 years and I decided to try getting off the couch again. This time I joined a cheaper gym, without any trainer or instructor available. I decided to get educated. I bought this book and read it cover to cover before my first visit to the gym. The text is clear and I found enough information to come up with a basic plan and get started. I have been pursuing my own training program since 2 months and I already can see some results. I go back to this book often for reference. Had I read this book prior to joining that other gym 2 years back, I would have had a much better experience.
Information I found to be most useful in this book:
- Practical guidelines about how often to exercise, what exercises to do in each workout session (and in what order), how many repetitions to do, how to organize your workouts weekly/monthly and how to keep a workout logbook.
- Description of the exercises themselves (with photos) including some advanced exercises which I am looking forward to try
- Safety tips and directions about proper form
- Clear definitions of all the jargon people use in this field (something that was very opaque to me)
- Description about what is what in terms of muscle groups and what to expect when you exercise them
- Discussion about nutrition and gadgets with tips to avoid buying unnecessary stuff
- Guidelines to exercise at home or while traveling
Besides being very comprehensive, the book is also well-written — with a straightforward, non-patronizing tone. I strongly recommend it.

So easy to read. So useful. Helped me create a plan for the gym for me and my fioncee. Will be reviewing and rereading for our next plan for the gym.
